Leipzig's Festivals

International, diverse, musical

The diversity of cultural offerings is a hallmark of life in the city of Leipzig. A large number of festivals contribute to this great variety. One thing they do have in common, though, is the high regard in which they are all held, not only in Leipzig but far beyond. All year round, the city’s festivals are like cultural magnets, attracting many international artists and visitors to the city, as well as drawing in local Leipzig audiences. The festivals are a major factor in creating the cosmopolitan atmosphere of this cultural metropolis.

Richard Wagner Festival

The Leipzig Wagner Festival takes place around the date of Richard Wagner's birthday in May and this year, it is part of the 2013 Wagner Bicentennial. Diverse aspects of the life and art of the Leipzig-born composer are presented in modern and unconventional ways.

Leipzig Bachfest

The Leipzig Bach Festival combines a musical programme of the highest quality with the historical authenticity of its venues: these are the actual places where Bach himself worked. Every year, this festival casts its spell over visitors from Leipzig and around the world with a variety of top-class events including secular and religious concerts, jazz, chamber music and open air concerts.

It was held for the first time in 1950, then from 1964 to 1996 it took place every four years and was divided into five performance categories. Now it is held on a three-year rotation, each time with three categories chosen from the five.
